Enhanced Oil & Gas Recovery

Practice Area:

Enhanced Oil &
Gas Recovery

Advanced Resources International (ARI) has world-leading expertise in the resources, technologies, markets, regulations, and economics of improved and enhanced hydrocarbon recovery from both conventional and unconventional oil and gas reservoirs.

Advanced Resources delivers integrated, data-driven solutions to maximize recovery from conventional and unconventional oil and gas assets. Our Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and advanced production strategies combine reservoir characterization, simulation, and field implementation to unlock incremental reserves, extend asset life, and improve project economics. With decades of global experience, ARI partners with operators to reduce technical risk, optimize performance, and deliver measurable value across the full project lifecycle.

Survey

A Survey of
U.S. CO₂ Enhanced Oil Recovery Projects

Updated to EOY 2024
An Annual Survey

Advanced Resources International conducts an annual survey of active CO₂ EOR projects in the U.S. This survey is provided as a public resource to tally the number of active CO₂ EOR projects, calculate total incremental oil production, and track CO₂ utilization.

The purpose of the new U.S. CO₂ EOR Survey is to highlight the sustained success of CO₂ EOR in the U.S. and demonstrate its viability for secure CO₂ storage.

Survey at a Glance:

Total projects: 140

Total operators: 25

Total CO₂ EOR oil prod: 219,700 bbl/d

  • Permian Basin (TX, NM): 151,200 bbl/d
  • SE Gulf Coast (MS, LA, TX): 26,000 bbl/d
  • Mid-Continent (OK, KS): 7,800 bbl/d
  • Rockies (CO, UT, WY, MT): 33,600 bbl/d
  • Michigan: 1,100 bbl/d

Total CO₂ Supply: 2.0 Bcf/d

  • "Natural" CO₂: 1.3 Bcf/d
  • "Industrial" CO₂: 0.7 Bcf/d
Study

A Special Study

This presentation, authored by Matt Wallace, Project Manager with ARI, was prepared for and presented at the 2025 SPE/AAPG/SEG CCUS event. For more information on this presentation or the survey, please contact Matt via e-mail at mwallace@adv-res.com

Study Objective: Can CO₂ EOR offer an economically viable pathway to continue CO₂ capture and storage in the U.S. following the end of 45Q tax benefits?

This Study presentation covers:

  • Storage of Anthropogenic CO₂ Using CO₂ EOR in the U.S.
  • Carbon Capture Projects Under Development in the U.S.
  • Technically Viable CO₂ Storage Using CO₂ EOR Near Carbon Capture Projects
  • Economics of CO₂ EOR Post 45Q
  • Economically Viable Carbon Storage Using CO₂ EOR Post 45Q
