EMISSIONS: Senators, think tank form new carbon capture alliance (07/13/2011)

The potential carbon reductions from enhanced oil recovery could store permanently at least a billion metric tons of carbon dioxide, or about a sixth of the U.S. annual total output, within two decades, said Vello Kuuskraa, president of Advanced Resources International Inc., a consulting company. The process involves capturing CO2 from natural sources or industrial facilities and pumping the gas underground to boost oil production that would not otherwise be recoverable.

While there is some disagreement on the numbers, the federal government has said that it expects the CO2 flow for enhanced oil recovery projects to quadruple by 2030.

World Shale Gas Resources: An Initial Assessment of 14 Regions Outside the United States

To gain a better understanding of the potential of international shale gas resources, in February, 2011 EIA commissioned an external consultant, Advanced Resources International, Inc. (ARI), to develop an initial set of shale gas resource assessments. This paper briefly describes key results, the report scope and methodology and discusses the key assumptions that underlie the results. The full consultant report prepared for EIA is in Attachment A. EIA anticipates using this work to inform other analysis and projections, and to provide a starting point for additional work on this and related topics.

December 16th, 2010: Webex Meeting of the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council

On December 16, 2010, Vello Kuuskraa, President, and Michael Godec, Vice President of Advances Resources International, Inc., gave a presentation to the first WebEx Meeting of the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council entitled "The Promise and Performance of Next Generation CO2-EOR." This presentation examines how alternative technology designs and operating strategies may enable industry to significantly improve CO2-EOR oil recovery efficiencies, while also potentially providing the opportunity for the sequestration of CO2. The presentation draws on laboratory work, reservoir simulation and in depth assessments of significant CO2-EOR field tests that show promise for high oil recovery. The insights gained from these sources are combined to show how injecting larger volumes of CO2, integrating horizontal wells with close vertical well spacing, rigorously managing the CO2-EOR operation, and controlling the conformance of the CO2 flood could lead to increased oil recovery efficiencies from CO2-EOR.

May 11th 2010: “Geologic Characterization of the Lower Cretaceous Paluxy Formation for the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration (secarb) Partnership Phase III Anthropogenic Test”

On May 11, 2010, a poster entitled, "Geologic Characterization of the Lower Cretaceous Paluxy Formation for the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration (SECARB) Partnership Phase III Anthropogenic Test", was presented by ARI geologist, Shawna Cyphers, at the 9th Annual Carbon Capture and Sequestration meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. The poster outlines ARI's initial geologic model and reservoir characterization of the Paluxy Formation, which is the injection target for the SECARB Phase III Anthropogenic Test. As an integrated CO2 capture, transportation, and storage demonstration this project represents a major step toward demonstrating commercial-scale storage of CO2 captured from an existing pulverized coal-fired power plant.

May 4th-6th 2010: Aspen Wye River Conference Center, Queenstown, Maryland; “Strategic Initiatives for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Deployment”

Mr. Vello Kuuskraa, president of Advanced Resources International, was invited to participate in a three-day workshop sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy, entitled: “Strategic Initiatives for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Deployment", held at the Aspen Wye River Conference Center, Queenstown, Maryland, May 4 through 6, 2010.  Mr. Kuuskraa was asked to prepare and present two presentations; “A “Green” Agenda for Fossil Energy” and “Gas Shales Drive the Unconventional Gas Revolution”.   The workshop was attended by Mr. James Markowsky, Assistant Secretary, Office of Fossil Energy, U.S. DOE, along with other staff members of U.S. DOE headquarters, NETL and private industry.

April 2010: WHITE HOUSE; “U.S.-China Shale Gas Resource Initiative”

In response to the White House U.S.-China Shale Gas Resource Initiative, Mr. Vello Kuuskraa, president of Advanced Resources International, was asked by the U.S. Department of Energy to participate in a training course on Shale Gas Development.  Mr. Kuuskraa traveled to Beijing, China with representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy, Chevron and Halliburton to conduct the three day workshop led by the former State Planning Commission now called the National Development and Reform Commission.  The course was attended by 180 people and feedback from the conference attendees was highly positive.

October 2009-March 2010: Advanced Resources International, Inc.; “Environmental Performance Of The Exploration And Production Industry: Past, Present, And Future”

During the 4th quarter of 2009 and 1st quarter of 2010, Michael L. Godec, Vice President of Advanced Resources, made 10 presentations during his tour as a 2009-2010 Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer program.  The title of his presentation is “Environmental Performance of the Exploration and Production Industry: Past, Present, and Future.”

This lecture builds on the author’s past work to document the technological progress made by the oil and gas exploration and production industry, and the environmental benefits realized from this progress. The lecture documents the improvements in environmental performance made by the E&P industry, examines industry and societal trends, and highlights some of the specific technological advances contributing to its performance. The lecture describes how company environmental performance has evolved from a necessary activity to comply with regulatory requirements to a major factor differentiating companies to stakeholders, including customers and the communities within which they operate -- or wish to operate. The lecture introduces new concepts of environmental performance, particularly relating to extracting environmental value from existing infrastructure. Finally, the lecture describes the likely key future role the E&P industry will play in addressing arguably the most important environmental issue of our time – global climate change.

The Distinguished Lecturer Program extends the knowledge and experience of some of the industry’s top experts in all phases of the E&P industry. By making available to every SPE section up to three lectures per year, the DL Program answers countless questions and advances technology on all fronts, in more than 450 presentations each year.

More information on the SPE Distinguished Lecturer Program can be found at http://www.spe.org/events/dl.

December 7 - 18, 2009: “Worldwide Gas Shales and Unconventional Gas: A Status Report”, prepared and presented by Mr. Vello A. Kuuskraa, president of Advanced Resources International, at the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP15, "Natural Gas, Renewables and Efficiency: Pathways to a Low-Carbon Economy" sponsored by the American Clean Skies Foundation (ACSF), the UN Foundation (UNF) and the Worldwatch Institute, Copenhagen.

Mr. Kuuskraa’s talk entitled “Worldwide Gas Shales and Unconventional Gas: A Status Report”, discussed how the discovery and development of gas shales and other unconventional gas resources in North America have led to a “paradigm shift” in the outlook for natural gas and the much larger role it could play in reducing emissions of CO2. Using the North American experience as the example, he discussed how the development of gas shales and unconventional gas could provide similar impacts on energy security and CO2 emission reductions in Europe, China and other areas with large, prospective gas shale basins.  Other presenters include Christopher Flavin, president of the Worldwatch Institute, Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Energy, and Senator Timothy E. Wirth, president of the United Nations Foundation.
